It's time to call bullshit and here's why

If no one has said it yet, Happy New Year! I recognize the title caught you off guard but I promise, it’s for good reason. It’s time to call bullshit. When I first started Pure Comm, I was merely 23 years old, winging it. I watched countless webinars, joined everyone’s Periscope, and tweaked my company’s logo, website over and over again. Can you relate?

Throughout the last 6, almost 7 years, I’ve focused so much on the aesthetic of my brand, the pretty posts, the colors and patching things to look good that I didn’t take time to focus on all the work behind the scenes. See, I know why I created Pure Comm and I had this big vision of how impactful it would be, but vision with no plan leads to chaos. I was so used to sounding good and looking good, that I didn’t prioritize good systems or processes, I didn’t work on structure and that led to failed client expectations, unmet needs and the growing fear of imposter syndrome.

So, now… it’s time to call BS. If you follow us on Instagram, you saw that I closed everything down for the month of December to focus and get aligned for the new year. Here’s what I learned:

You’ve got to tear it all down and start over.

The way I was managing Pure Comm was completely unsustainable. I couldn’t properly delegate work to my assistant because I hadn’t written down any processes. I was so eager to get new clients that very few would consider renewing their contract with me. I had been operating financially with such a poverty mindset that I didn’t have set pricing structures in place and I would get the money and spend it just as fast. Terrible, just terrible.

Trusting God means more than words.

This company is a faith-based company meaning that I aim to build this business on the basis of scripture and operate in all areas of my business for the glory of God. If that’s my standard, I had to come to terms that I wasn’t living up to that. It’s not just about posting scriptures on Instagram to sound spiritual but it’s about involving God in my every day of my business. Prayer before meetings. Prayer before posting. Wisdom in negotiations. Discernment about prospective clients. All of it has to come under the authority of what God is saying and how he’s directing me.

Take ownership: This is YOUR business. Build it YOUR way.

This was such a hard truth. As someone that hasn’t fully transitioned out of corporate America, during my time off, I realized I was so used to getting direction on things in my full-time job that it was seeping into my business. I was looking to others in my industry, the webinars, trainings, etc. to tell me how to build this company, when instead, no one can fully guide me because it’s not their business. There is no right or wrong way to build your company. Build it - test it - tweak and keep what you want, get rid of what you don’t. There’s freedom in that, but only if you allow it to be.

So what does that mean for 2022?

So glad you asked. Here’s what that actually means:

  • I won’t be taking any new 1:1 management clients. For how long? Not sure. Maybe all year? Maybe just the first 6 months.

  • No more formulaic social posts or content. I’m not going to be confined to a specific posting schedule and also won’t be posting content everywhere at all time.

  • Building our community through email. More content updates, news and real convos are going to be happening via email and the blog. Sign up for emails. Check back for more blog posts.

  • Revamping services, offers, and pricing. I’m working to create better experiences for clients, prestige offerings at premium pricing.

  • Creating better systems and processes through mentorship and coaching. I’m super excited about this! The digital marketing and social media space is one that anyone can be considered an “expert” and it can drown out folks who are trained for these roles and have studied the craft. Mentorship and coaching will allow me to clear my head of all the thoughts regarding Pure Comm and get the guidance needed to scale and grow.

Well friends, I really appreciate all the love, support and those that have championed me over these last few years. Pure Comm is a labor of love and I’ve had the opportunity to create and build with so many amazing small business owners. As we turn the page of the old ways, it’s my hope and prayer that this is merely a leveling up — and means to proper alignment for what the future holds.

Stay tuned. Follow along for the journey. I’m not holding anything back.

All love,
